Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is used to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. NOx is produced in high cylinder temperatures and pressures. EGR works by recirculating exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. This decreases the oxygen in the incoming air and provides non-combustible gases that absorb combustion heat to reduce peak in-cylinder temperatures.
