Volute

The turbocharger turbine's spiral cone shaped inlet is called a Volute and is sized by the turbine Aspect Ratio (AR). It begins at the exhaust flange opening and changes shape towards the turbine impeller. The volute compresses airflow as it follows the spiral shape to the impeller.
